DESIGN - EYF2019 Special - 'Thistle'
A tactile cuff-bracelet in copper & yarn - this piece is delicately hand knitted and hand stitched using a mixed media of purple coloured copper jewellery wire, luxury hand-dyed yarn and crystal.
The luxury yarn used for this design was specially hand dyed by Countess Ablaze who is a hand-dyer based in Manchester, U.K.
This was a special commission for the Edinburgh Yarn Festival 2019, for which I produced a collection centred around the 'Thistle' theme. The Countess used the crystal colours I had in mind to produce an exclusive skein palate of purples, leaf-greens, emerald & pink.
The yarn is a mix of Bluefaced leicester wool & mulberry silk, which is very soft, non-itchy and luxurious to touch.
The crystal window is designed to depict a thistle, the national flower of Scotland.
The prickly purple thistle was adopted as the Emblem of Scotland during the reign of Alexander III (1249- 1286).
Legend has it that a sleeping party of Scots warriors were saved from ambush by an invading Norse army when one of the enemies trod on the spiky plant. He shrieked out in pain, alerting the clansmen, and the Scots won the day.
The back of the cuff is knitted with a crossing cable pattern, to form diamond shapes - this is to resemble the classic Argyll or Argyle pattern, which derives from the tartan of Clan Campbell of Argyll in western Scotland.
The wire colour may vary slightly depending on the reel batch, and how the yarn colours fall within the piece may vary depending on which part of the yarn I start knitting with, but any variation will be very slight. The crystals will be identical to the sample image.
A small batch of yarn was produced in this specific colourway, so only a limited amount of luxury yarn is available to make these thistle cuffs.
So, these will be a LIMITED EDITION item.
This cuff is a made to order, and made-to-measure item.

Make sure to give an accurate wrist measurement that's comfortable - the yarn will give enough stretch for you to take the cuff on and off easily, so there is no need to add extra inches, unless you want the cuff to sit loosely, or prefer to wear it higher up the arm.
